Ilana S. Greenstein graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2003. She was a copy editor for the Virginia Journal of International Law and spent a summer as a legal intern for the Office of Special Investigations, Department of Justice, where she assisted in the prosecution, denaturalization, and deportation of Nazi criminals illegally residing in the United States. Ms. Greenstein graduated with honors from Haverford College in economics and political science in 1998. She spent a year abroad at the London School of Economics. In 1994, she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.
Prior to joining the practice, Ms. Greenstein worked as an Operations Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency from 2002 until 2008, including a one-year tour in Baghdad, Iraq. Prior to the CIA and law school, Ms. Greenstein served in Sarajevo, Bosnia as the Senior Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense National Intelligence Cell. She also served as an Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. European Command Joint Analysis Center, RAF Base Molesworth, England from 1999 to 2000. Ms. Greenstein’s career in intelligence began with an internship in 1998 at the Office of Naval Intelligence.
Ms. Greenstein has been published, written about, and quoted in the Washington Post, Washington Times, Congressional Quarterly (CQ), Washington Jewish Week, and American Lawyer. She has contributed to former CIA Inspector General Frederick Hitz’s article “Unleashing the Rogue Elephant: September 11 and Letting the CIA Be the CIA,” 25 Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy 765-80 (2002) and the publication of Behind the Lines by Andrew Carroll, editor of the New York Times best-selling War Letters. In 2005, Ms. Greenstein received the CIA’s annual award for outstanding literary contribution to intelligence reform for her article in a well-known Intelligence Community publication. She is currently working on a book about her experiences at the CIA.
In January 2009, Ms. Greenstein joined Mark S. Zaid, P.C. as Of Counsel. She is a member of the bar of Maryland, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia and the District of Maryland.
